Picture That – WW-02-06

As we move from our modelling layer into our visualisations within Power BI, it becomes essential to reconsider why we do all this. What is the Business Benefit? The compelling benefit of Power BI is that it becomes possible to minimise the “distance” between event and report. This revolutionises the way you can do business as suddenly information that you would have served up to the board room two weeks after the end of the period and after many person-days of work can be available nearly immediately (do not confuse strategic and operational reporting).

In this video, we start by looking at the original report pack and lay out some basics of the improvement cycle we are currently going through. As you consider it, your content structures will start to coalesce in your mind. We must always be aware of what our vision is for a particular report. One lesson that we will not cover in this series as the goal is to make a new Free Report is the concept of secondary Reports (Microsoft unflatteringly call these “Thin Reports”) that allow you to make your Data Model pull double, triple or even more duty. So make your Power BI Reports small and concise, one interactive page is infinitely superior to 50+ pages that no one will view! Don’t bring the Death by PowerPoint mindset to your Power BI.
